PART 1 PART 2 PART 3 PART 4 PART 5 PART 6 (Bonus Missing Scene)
Jack walked into the Hub and found Gwen swinging on her chair.
‘Hi.’
‘Morning. You look…cheery…’
‘Sex - it’s good for the serotonin levels.’
Gwen rolled her eyes, ‘You mean Ianto is full of endorphins.’
Jack smirked and she cut him off before he could answer, ‘what did you find out about your mysterious woman that you went mysteriously visiting then…?’ She looked round for Ianto to appear and say something offensive and funny and Jack shook his head despairingly.
‘He’s gone out. And stop trying to get me in trouble.’
‘Oh. Okay then,’ she pouted, ‘so what do you know?’
‘Everything.’ Jack replied, jumping up the step to sit near her and quirking his eyebrow questioningly, ‘what is it with you 21st century woman and the need to talk about your entire life story to anyone? It’s unnerving.’
‘Just because you’re all talk and no…actual…talk…’ She frowned confusedly and glanced Jack’s expression harden, continuing quickly, ‘sorry carry on.’
‘Jessica Collins.’ He announced, ‘she was beautiful, smart, well spoken, rich family, together with one Patrick Lewisham for 8 years, childhood sweethearts, married for 2, were thinking about having children and living happily ever after.’
‘So obviously it all went to shit,’ Gwen offered as she tapped a pen against her cheek.
‘Obviously…she ended up head over heels, crazy, Romeo and Juliet style in love with someone else - Smith Wilson. Had a torrid and steamy affair – what?’ Gwen was laughing at him and he looked at her confused, ‘what?!’
‘Torrid and steamy?’ She snorted and shook her head, ‘I didn’t realise you read Danielle Steel novels that’s all…’
‘Who do you think she was writing about?’
Gwen gaped and widened her eyes.
‘No?!’
Jack smirked, ‘some very good memories for me in those novels...’
Gwen almost laughed and swung more on her chair, ‘you’re unbelievable.’
‘That’s what she said.’
She smacked him hard on the arm and he laughed, ‘shut up! Come on what happened with the lover boy?’
Jack settled back against the station and crossed his ankles, looking down at her, ‘she got everything together to leave our lovely Patrick - suitcases packed, money saved - stowed in cash, and lingerie bought. I’m assuming…Husband comes home, discovers plans and she leaves, sets up in the new flat, goes to meet Romeo at a neutral spot but he never shows.’
‘Oh God,’ Gwen gestured to the coffee machine and got up, Jack following her automatically as she made drinks, ‘I don’t know who I feel most sorry for…the husband or her?’
‘It gets worse. She finally returns to the flat to see what happened, its burnt to the ground – faulty electrics apparently – and lover boy had turned up but there by mistake and now he’s in the morgue.’
‘Oh God!’ She passed Jack a mug of coffee and took a sip from hers, absently wondering how Ianto made it taste better when there was no other way to make it.
‘Yeah, he never had any family so far as she knows and that was that. Devastated, she divorces Patrick and sets up on her own.’
Jack sighed and drank his coffee, absently comparing it with Ianto’s and wondering why his was so much better, ‘she said she was heart broken, their relationship was pretty intense but she’s with a new man about to get married again and hasn’t seen Patrick - or Ben as we know him since the divorce.’
‘And none of this means anything to you?’
‘Nope.’
‘So why is he stalking us?’
Jack shrugged heavily, ‘no idea.’
‘Well it’s not you and not me.’ Gwen walked back over to her station and sat down opposite Jack, ‘so its either Ianto or Torchwood in general.’
‘I agree with you,’ he agreed, ‘and Torchwood could have any number of enemies…’
‘So I can check Ianto out first?’ Gwen grinned wickedly and Jack looked fleetingly suspicious.
‘That’s not what I was going to say.’
‘Can I though?’
‘You won’t find anything.’ Jack finished his coffee and stared across at her.
‘You’ve done it already? Trust issues much?’
Jack smiled, ‘ages ago - before I hired him.’
Gwen was about to say something and interrupted herself frowning, ‘how did you meet Ianto?’
‘Story for another day’ Jack grinned, ‘…let’s just say…he swept me of my feet and I fell for him from the off.’
‘Okaaaaaaay – Well you weren’t a policewoman,’ Jack opened his mouth to say something and Gwen pointed, ‘– don’t! So if Ianto has anything to do with this I’ll find out.’
She sounded suitably impressed with herself and Jack had a lot of paperwork to do so he decided to let her get on with what she wanted.
‘Alright. Don’t tell him. I’ll be in my office, let me know when you’ve done.’
Gwen turned to her computer and grinned…permission to investigate Ianto. Brilliant.
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Three hours later Gwen smashed through his office door wildly and Jack jolted as she came at him brandishing reams of paper.
‘JACK! Guess what I found!’
‘Judging by your excitement the meaning of life because it’s not 42, that was a miscalculation – ooo or that item from Anne Summers that you wanted came back into stock?’
Her excitement visibly calmed and she stared at him warily.
‘No. How do you know about that?’
Jack smirked and winked at her, ‘Ianto knows everything. And when you sleep with the person that knows everything, you’re bound to stumble upon some interesting information now and again…by the way – it’s very good.’
Gwen blushed and fiddled with the paper and Jack took pity on her, ‘sorry. Do go on.’
‘Well –‘ she cleared her throat and returned to her discovery, ‘turns out other than the usual – qualifications and…and Lisa…’ Jack remained expressionless and Gwen continued quickly, ‘Ianto has a shoplifting offence.’
‘Yeah I knew that. I thought you might have come up with something more…’
‘Let me finish. Ianto may know everything but I know a fair bit too. I couldn’t find out exactly, but the shoplifting thing was a cover up - a lesser charge provided by a bent police officer that Ianto somehow manipulated into making a deal with him. In reality it was part of something bigger, I didn’t get time to find out all the details but essentially it was a con job gone wrong.’
‘Wait – Ianto? In a con job - Ianto’s a con man?!’
Jack’s mind raced and Gwen continued, trying to ignore the hurt in his reaction.
‘There’s no further information other than what’s in here. We can assume at least once he was part of a con job yes. But that’s not the really interesting thing. I kept digging on our stalker Patrick and his conviction for GBH –‘
‘Grievous bodily harm?’ Jack muttered, trying to bring himself back from Gwen’s revelation and thinking how therapeutic inflicting a bit of grievous bodily harm right now would be.
‘Yes. Apparently it was in London. He had left Bath, changed his name to Ben after owing money and moved there when this happened. He was out of his face, alcohol level was high but he gave the guy quite a beating claiming he had ruined his life, shouting all odds and it was witnessed by a large number of the public.’
‘Why does this matter?’
‘Well the interesting thing is there were never any charges pressed, the police took care of it but the victim wanted to forget it, forgive him, said it was a mistake. There are no records of him on the police files, all strictly anonymous and even I couldn’t get to him except he checked into the hospital for treatment to head injuries.’
‘Gwen I don’t –‘
‘The name that checked in was Ianto Jones.’
‘What?!’ Jack stood up noisily, his chair clattering against the floor and Gwen jerked out of his way.
‘Ianto Jones.’ She looked up at him, ‘our Ianto.’
‘Ianto used to be a con man and he’s the one Patrick beat up? What the HELL is going on!’
Gwen sat quietly and watched as he scowled and kicked his desk viciously.
‘I think we should get Ianto and find out,’ she suggested and Jack paced running his hands down his face muttering angrily.
‘He isn’t back.’
‘He’s been gone for nearly four hours…’Gwen picked up her phone and dialled his number, worrying her lip as Jack watched, arms crossed against his chest and eyes like thunder.
‘Answer phone.’
Jack started to pace again and turned to look at her, ‘what do you think?’
‘I think he always answers.’
‘Me too,’ Jack agreed.
‘I think he’s clearly involved with this stalker guy and we missed the fact he was targeting Ianto.’
‘You’re right,’ his voice started to crack and he strained to control it, ‘do you think he’s okay?’
‘I’m sure he’s fine.’ Gwen smiled falsely and Jack ran his hand through his hair.
‘Oh God.’
‘Let’s go to Patrick’s place. Search for clues yeah?’ She reached out to rub his hand reassuringly but he had already left, pulling his coat on and running down into the Hub and out the door.
A/N 2: Hmmm, yeah. So there you go. Written for
morgiabecause her comments make my day, they are hilarious and lovely, she sends me cybercake, she reads my stuff even tho she doesn’t understand it and she got slightly confused with the translation of the word plot – if you only knew what she said it meant…
